Does reading books from pro players really enhance your game?

December 23, 2008 : Posted by admin

I bought a bunch of books but I haven't gotten around to reading them, I do love to read but I just can't read poker books!! I've been doing good but would my game be better if I read the books by Sklansky and Harrington?

To an extent.

I believe it is crucial to formulate your own personal strategy that fits you over time. However, if you're going to read a poker book, read the mechanical aspects of poker like, odds, implied odds, starting hands, position, etc. Johnny Chan never read a poker book, and look at what he's done. You learn to adapt into your own style, and reading a poker book will only hinder the chemistry you've already created between you and the way you think. I believe the best way to enhance your game is through your own experience. I have read Doyle Brunson's, "Super System" and while it helped me with the technical and mathematical aspects of the game, it did not help me strategically because I simply play a different style.

PS: The most helpful information out of a poker book that I've recieved was lessons on bankroll management.

I hope you find this helpful.

What is your favorite Poker book and why?

December 21, 2008 : Posted by admin

I have read several and am looking to evolve into a poker pro. Can you help me?

I think sklanksy has the best beginner books but I don't think its enough anymore to be a consistent winning player.

Doyle Brunson, Super-Systems and Super-Systems 2. It really sets out the philosophy and thinking behind aggressive play without being a maniac idiot. You should read it once, play alot then read it again. I think he's book is must read for any cash player and also his got some of the best explanation of small ball strategy around.

Ah also one more…. Matt Lessinger is great primer for bluffers.

What is the best poker book to by besides Super/System?

I've already got it 1, and am starting on 2. Any other goods books anybody know of?

Buy the books or wait for them to be available at the library?

December 17, 2008 : Posted by admin

What should I do? All the good poker books are checked out from the library. I am placed on waiting lists, and I don’t know when I will get my hands on them.

I really want to be good a poker as soon as I can, because I love poker and I can’t wait.

Should I buy them? But buying them will deplete my bankroll a little bit, and honestly, my bankroll is not that much as I only make minimum wage.

Please give advise. Do you think it is better to buy books or borrow them from the library?

i would wait until they have them at the library. if you don’t like them you can always return them.

What is the best poker books/movies?

December 15, 2008 : Posted by admin

What are everyones favorite poker Hold ‘Em books/movies and why? What topics is it/are they best at covering (such as betting pre flop, reading player, counting odds, playing styles etc.)

The only ones I have cared for so far are the Harrington on Hold ‘Em series, 3 volumes covers most everything you need to know with great examples, and is geared to the conservative style I am trying to master since I am moving away from the aggressive

what the best Holdem Poker book ever writtne to date?

December 13, 2008 : Posted by admin

I have a fair size libuary of poker books. Now I'd just like a opinion from some of you as to who you feel has written the best one.

I'm going to have to agree and disagree with bivouac, but only slightly.

Read "Super System" by Doyle Brunson. If you don't have his chapter on NLHE under your belt, you're bringing a knife to a gun fight. Everyone else has read it, so do yourself a favor and read it too.

(Here's my little disagreement): If you are planning on playing a lot of tournament NLHE, you must, must, must read "Harrington on Hold 'Em Vol. 1 & 2" by Dan Harrington. If you study these books seriously (and I mean seriously), they will give you an edge in tourneys.

I also take a slightly different opinion on best narrative hold 'em book. I personally like "Positively Fifth Street" by James Macmanus. I just found his everyman at the WSOP story to be a little more compelling than the Andy Beal shebang.

Good Luck.

Are there any poker books written by women besides the Annie Duke one?

December 11, 2008 : Posted by admin

amazon.com has over 56,000 books that deal with poker, in one way or another. I'm sure some of them have female authors. Is there a specific reason you only want female authors?

The Video Poker Edge: How to Play Smart and Bet Right by Linda Boyd

How to Turn Your Poker Playing into a Business: Knowing What to Deduct to Improve Your Odds With the IRS by Ann-Margaret Johnston

what are the best poker books that have to deal with psychology?

December 09, 2008 : Posted by admin

Caro's Book of Tells…the book is out dated and you shouldn't go by everything it says….none the less every good poker player should know the tells in the book…warning however….most good players know these tells and they are really only effective on amateurs…..
I know there is some other tell book by some FBI agent Navarro… which i hear is very good…probably more applicable than Caro's in today's poker society
Psychology is just something you really learn at the table though…books can't teach it well

what are some good poker books?l?

Yeah what poker coach said. If you want to be good at Sit and Go or any tournament poker Harrington on Holdem (Vol 1-3) are simply a must read.
