By " playing with friends", you mean you're playing home games right? So the first thing I suggest you to do, is to play live tourney at any casinos in your area, so you can understand the structure of the tournament, and play with other people than your friends. You can also play online you will find a lot of pros on it, full tilt for example, a lot of pros names will be highlight in red. If you don't have any experience with online poker, start by playing small buy-in tourney.

I don’t want to be greedy by any means. I would just like to go and have fun but insure I come on top. I have heard that for winning money and not losing that video poker is the best bet. Dan Harrington’s books are absolutely the best. He wrote three books but they are like one continuous instruction.
“Harrington on Hold’em” is the title. Start with volume one “Strategic Play”.
I’ve got about 20 books in my poker library and there is no doubt about which ones improved my play the most.
Some writers suggest a certain play saying, “I would do such and such in this situation”, but you don’t understand why they would. Dan gives information on why, how much, and the purpose of plays. Also, what you should be considering and when. His explanations help you understand WHY, not just what to do.
Dan’s books are referred to by many poker writers in magazines and by commentators during televised poker tournaments. His writings are considered the bible of poker playing.

Learn your pot odds
No when to fold when you are beat and bet
Learn how much you should bet to manipulate pot odds
Learn your best style of play ex. tight agressive, loose passive
Know how to capitilize on position
Know how to play suited connectors
Know how to bluff and semibluff
Know your oppenents and their tells (betting and facial)
If you just started, read a book that tells you what hands and what postion to play them in. This requires patience, but you will get a profilt. Start at 1-2 dollar tables. Once you get the feel of the game, start varying your play.(like raising with suited connectors or trash hands like 7,10)
